AIES 2026 STUDENT PROGRAM
[Submission Site]
The AIES student track is a competitive program that provides PhD students with targeted programming, mentorship, and financial support to attend AIES. In addition to attending the conference, accepted students present their research in a lightning talk and poster session, participate in breakout groups with peers, and receive mentoring from senior scholars.
All PhD students with research interests relevant to the conference are welcome to apply, whether or not they have already submitted a paper to the main track of AIES. (See the main track CFP for the full list of research topics.) Students with papers submitted to the main track must make a separate application if they wish to be considered for the student program.
Acceptance into the student program will include both free conference registration and a travel stipend to significantly offset travel, as well as some accommodation costs. The precise award amount will vary according to financial need and availability of funds.
We welcome applications from a wide array of disciplinary and personal backgrounds. AIES especially encourages students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized groups to apply.
Applications will be assessed against several factors, including the relevance and quality of the work submitted, evidence of research progress, contribution to diversity, and capacity to benefit from the experience.
Please see the submissions page for complete details on putting together an application.

SUBMISSION PACKET INSTRUCTIONS – STUDENTS
Important Note: Because this program centers on the student as researcher and scholar, rather than on a particular piece of scholarly output, the student should be the only author listed per submission.
Applicants to the student track should assemble the following application packet into one PDF document and submit it through EasyChair.
1. Cover Sheet. This is a 1/2-page information sheet that includes:
- Your full name, contact details, official affiliation, home page, country of residence, and country of citizenship.
- Your expected graduation date and the number of years in your current program.
- Your research advisor’s full name and contact details.
- A list of up to 5 keywords that you would use to describe your research.
- If you also have a paper submitted to the AIES main track, please provide us with the title and co-authors.
2. Financial Statement. This is a 1-page information sheet that includes:
- Whether you are requesting financial support from AIES to attend the conference. (If the answer is “no”, no further information is required.)
- Sources of funding other than AIES
Please note that financial support can only be requested from AIES if you lack access to sufficient funds from other sources.
If you are requesting financial support, provide an itemized travel budget (in USD) for your expected expenses for transportation. Transportation expenses must be based on lowest available fares for economy-class travel, including one checked bag. Include any expected expenses for ground transportation (rail, bus, taxi). Add 600 USD for estimated room and board expenses in Malmö.
Declare any funding sources you can reliably draw upon from your home university to cover these expenses, and indicate the total funding award you are seeking from AIES.
Please note: Acceptance notifications will include details regarding any initial funding awards. Please note that funding is competitive and may not be available for all participants at the time of notification. Furthermore, initial awards may not cover all requested expenses. Students may receive additional ‘top-up’ support if further funding is secured.
3. Extended Abstract: a 2-page summary of the research you intend to present and how it fits to one or more of the conference themes. The summary should be in AAAI-2026 format, which includes references. AAAI 2026 Author Kit can be found here.
- This summary should give a brief background for your research, explain the central research question(s), and explain the work you have accomplished so far.
- Be sure to clearly describe your work (e.g., what you have done, and what you plan to work on), while emphasizing the contributions and their significance. Please use the first person where appropriate.
- This may overlap with submission to AIES or other conferences; however, please address the specific criteria above.
- Participants, if accepted, will have the option of publishing this abstract in the proceedings.
4. A CV, not to exceed 3 pages, which includes:
- your background and a brief statement of your research interests;
- relevant experience in research, education, or employment;
- any publications (accepted or pending) in conferences or journals.
5. Personal Statement: A short statement (no more than one page) which outlines what you hope to gain from attending AIES and what unique perspective you can contribute to the discussions. Please mention if you have participated in any past student programs at other conferences or plan to participate in any others.
